No Easy Way Out of Being Overweight

A few months ago, I started a program that I referred to as 90 by 50, meaning I wanted to lose 90 pounds by the time I turned 50. Well, that program is stuck in neutral. I have lost zero pounds and my 50th is in about six months. Still doable, but at this point, probably not even healthy to lose that much weight in that short of a time period.

Now, with the holidays fast approaching, the world going to hell, and schoolwork, it’s even harder not to reach for that nearest batch of comfort food or sweet holiday treats. I ask myself over and over … what the hell am I going to do and how am I going to shed this weight?

In high school, I played football, thus when football season rolled around, I had a built-in weight loss program that would pare me down to a svelte 170 pounds, which is where I want to get down to now.  Back then, I had football coaches pushing me and the metabolism of a 17-year-old. Now, no one pushes me and I have the metabolism of a 49-year-old.

I bought a Fit-Bit for Christmas, but I have never been one to wear a watch, thus I have resisted it thus far. Yeah, it’s a cute little toy to let you know that you are indeed up and moving around. It will even buzz to let you know that you have been sitting on your ass too long. Nice, but a football coach it is not.

I have been kicking around the idea of getting a heavy bag and a speed bag to put up in my garage. I have never boxed or fought anyone, but, if it works for Rocky, maybe it could work for me. Some of my favorite workout songs come from the Rocky movies. They include:

No Easy Way Out which comes from Rocky IV. It is played during a montage of Rocky driving around town trying to relieve his pain after Apollo was killed in the ring by Drago.

Gonna Fly Now Not sure how the theme from Rocky doesn’t get your blood flowing and make you want to run stair laps. Heck, when I hear this, I want to run up the steps in Philly.

Another of my favorites is from the eighties wrestling movie, VisionQuest. The song Lunatic Fringe gets my blood pumping, making it easier to run on the treadmill. One more from VisionQuest, Only The Young, makes me feel like running, which doesn’t happen often. It is the opening song in which the main character, Louden Swain, is seen running through the city of Spokane, Washington.

Well, it looks like I’ve got my playlist ready. Now what? I have to curtail my eating. I have thought many times about going vegetarian, but after basically being a “meat-a-tarian” for so long, not sure if I can make the transition. I so badly want to get back to my goal weight of 170. The bad thing for me is that I am such a creature of habit. Breaking the bad habits I have developed over my lifetime is not going to be easy, but, doable, I think.

I have said it before … I am tired of being the fat, old guy. Well, there is nothing I can do about my age, unfortunately, but I can work on my body. I am about 5-9 and currently weight 264 pounds. I would post a photo, but don’t want to scare people away.

For those of you out there that are in shape. How do YOU do it? Diet? Exercise? Both? Any tips you can lend would be greatly appreciated. Do you have some favorite workout music? If so, let me know what it is. I can use all the motivation I can get.

YO, ADRIAN!
